Procession & Veneration of Our Lady of Consolation,

Patroness of Luxembourg

Carmelite Monastery Chapel

1101 N. River Road

Des Plaines, IL   60016

Each year, the metro-Chicago Luxembourg American community and guests gather for the annual Procession & Veneration of Our Lady of Consolation, Patroness of Luxembourg, at the Carmelite Monastery Chapel in Des Plaines.  This event is reminiscent of the annual Octave Procession and Veneration of Our Lady of Luxembourg celebrated in the Grand Duchy for centuries.

The Des Plaines celebration includes an outdoor procession with a statue of Our Lady of Consolation that is housed in the Carmelite Monastery Chapel.  The procession is followed by solemn veneration and a Pontifical Mass celebrating Our Lady of Consolation.  Luxembourg American clergy from metro-Chicago, including Bishop Raymond Goedert, retired auxiliary bishop of Chicago, serve as celebrants.  Clergy involved in past celebrations include Fr. Robert Goedert, Fr. John Thinnes, Fr. John Clemens, and Fr. Francis Kamp.  The Mass is followed by brunch and fellowship at a local restaurant (reservations required).

The statue of Our Lady of Consolation, Patroness of Luxembourg, in the Carmelite Monastery Chapel was gifted to the Chicago Luxembourg American community by the Cathedral de Notre-Dame, Luxembourg City, and its pastor Fr. Nicolas Wirtz in 1978.  It was enshrined at the Carmelite Monastery in Des Plaines on October 27, 1978.  The Sisters of Carmel at the monastery are cloistered so the statue is only available to be viewed on the day of the Procession & Veneration.

For more information about the Procession & Veneration Celebration, contact Barbara Hames at alero6@comcast.net or 630-643-1152.
